Fritt Ord Foundation grants for critics awarded
The Fritt Ord Foundation has now awarded their annual grants to critics. At NOK 200 000 each, the grants should result in a steady stream of reviews during the period from August 2018 to August 2019. The grant scheme was established in 2015, and 11 grants are being awarded this year.
Of the 42 applications recieved, grants were awarded to the following individuals: Aage Storm Borchgrevink (factual prose etc., Dagbladet), Emil Henrik Flatø (ideas, art and culture, Morgenbladet), Kjersti Juul (dramatic art, Vårt Land), Oda Bhar Lurås (pictorial art, etc., Morgenbladet), Gabriel Moro (fiction, VG), Eivind Myklebust (factual prose and fiction, Klassekampen), Jon Rognlien (factual prose and fiction, Dagbladet), Per Christian Selmer-Anderssen (dramatic art, Aftenposten), Janne Karin Støylen (literature for children, Dag og Tid), Margunn Vikingstad (fiction, Morgenbladet) and Hilde Østby (factual prose, Aftenposten).
Critics who write for daily and weekly media were given the highest priority, and several of the critics mentioned above also write for journals, magazines, online publications and different niche media.
Fritt Ord’s grants for critics are intended to promote high quality and professionalisation among critics and reviewers, and the Foundation aspires to give more critics better opportunities to practice their profession and to spend more time on it. The grants are intended to supplement other income from reviews, on top of their ordinary fees from the newspapers.
In addition to the annual grants for critics, Fritt Ord supports this field in other ways as well. Daily and weekly media and the critics who write for them can apply for project support for specific critical review projects under the call for applications for “Norwegian Journalism”. There are seven ordinary deadlines for applications under this scheme each year. See the call for proposals for more information.
