Teachers' seminar: Censorship

Welcome to a seminar on censorship in Norway and abroad, Friday, 15 January 2016, from 9.30 a.m. to 3.15 p.m. at the Fritt Ord Foundation, Uranienborgveien 2, Oslo.

There will be lectures, discussions and group work, featuring Anine Kierulf, Ove Solum, Trond Haugen, Sidsel Wold and Ludvig Løkholm Lewin. Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) correspondents Kristin Solberg and Peter Svaar will join in by video link.

The seminar will be organised by the Fritt Ord Foundation Competition for Upper Secondary Schools in collaboration with NRK School. The Fritt Ord Foundation competition is an annual event that invites upper secondary students to submit entries about freedom of expression and democracy.

What is censorship and can censorship be abused + three reasons for freedom of expression

10.00 a.m. – 10.15 a.m. Group discussions

10.15 a.m. – 10.30 a.m. Break

10.30 a.m. – 10.45 a.m. Ove Solum, University of Oslo: Should people be able to see what they want to? About film censorship.

10.45 a.m. – 11.00 a.m. Trond Haugen, National Library: The Song of the Red Ruby. Erotic transgressions in Norwegian literature.

11.00 a.m. – 11.15 a.m. Discussion.

11:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Lunch

12.00 p.m. – 12.45 p.m. Sidsel Wold: When everyone has an opinion about what you say.
Sidsel Wold is a journalist with the foreign affairs department of NRK, and she has been a foreign correspondent in the Middle East.

Brief interludes on video link with NRK correspondents Kristin Solberg and Peter Svaar.

Kristin Solberg: Turkey and censorship.
Kristin Solberg is a foreign correspondent with NRK, and she is currently based in Istanbul. She was the recipient of the 2014 Great Journalist Prize.

Peter Svaar: In the realm of Kim Jong-un, where censorship is everywhere.
Peter Svaar is a foreign correspondent with NRK, and he is currently based in Beijing. He will share stories from his coverage of North Korea and his life as a journalist in China.

12.45 a.m. – 1.30 p.m. Group work: Censorship in Norway and abroad – how to make good teaching plans?

1.45 p.m. – 2.15 p.m. Presentation of group work

2.15 p.m. – 3.00 p.m. Ludvig Løkholm Lewin: Make radio documentaries!
Lewin is a journalist at NRK and he will demonstrate how the production of radio documentaries can be used in teaching.

3.00 p.m. – 3.15 p.m. Conclusion and evaluation
